2001 S40 with a Transmission Issue

A 2001 S40 has become available locally. Normally I wouldn't bother with the Mitsubishi collaboration but I've been wanting a small commuter and at $400 this car is cheap enough (and the seller seems honest enough). 144K miles on the clock.

He says there's a couple engine codes that he couldn't figure out and a transmission speed sensor code that corresponds with the speedo going in and out. He says it sometimes drives perfectly, other times "the transmission can shift rough".

It has at least one other issue driving the cost down (a rope serves as the drivers door handle) but I'm wondering if the tranny makes this car a lost cause? I gather that the AW55 has a poor reputation (at least in the early 2000s) but am ignorant on the symptoms and fixes.

Walk away, run away, or tranny flush and smile?

Thanks!
Will

Walk away, run away, or tranny flush and smile? Depends on the "engine codes". The speedo signal goes through the ABS module (is the ABS light on?) The fluctuating speed signal will also cause some engine codes.

In other 2001 Volvos, the instrument cluster requires repairing to 'fix' the problem. The heat sink is not large enough and resistors fail - $400-500 'fix'.

Seller will send me the codes tomorrow. Further research based upon your input is starting to suggest a faulty ABS module in addition to trans issues.

My last $400 Volvo I drove home on 4/5 cylinders but I had confidence that I knew the cause and could fix it. This one (in addition to being less desirable) is looking like more of a headache than it's worth.

      Lacing up my running shoes,
      Will

if you are looking for a cheap commuter car, get on your local Craigslist. Set the max price to $2000, by owner, photo.
