S60 DTC P0090, either runs fine or dies right away

2004 S60 turbo. Either runs fine or stalls right after starting. Pulled DTC P0090.

Longer story, car was running fine, then one day when starting (cold engine) it died right away. Several start attempts, engine caught, ran a second or a few, then died. Sat 10 minutes, started up, drove home with no problems.
Several start attempts at home, engine ran for a few seconds then died. Read DTC P0090 and decided to replace the fuel pressure sensor. That did not Seem to help. Car stalled right after starting.

Car sat a couple weeks, tried again, it started and idled fine for several minutes (not yet ready to go somewhere). Currently no CEL, no codes found.

So, car either runs fine or dies. What to do?

The PEM serves the same function as the 850 Fuel pump controller and is also similar in it being prone to failure.

I found a used OEM PEM fuel controller $30 shipped at Ebay.

The new prices Ebay first regurgitated were obscene, $500+, probably sending me to
the company parts warehouse first.

Ach someone needs a spanking over that price.

The end of the story... it was the PEM, as predicted. Easy enough to install. Many available on eBay.

Took the good advice to review YouTube how to videos, very helpful since the job involves working with something you can barely see.

Adding my experience to maybe save someone a few minutes scrounging around on the driveway. You need a 7mm socket, or a 9/32 is close enough. Buy a PEM that came from inside a car, it will have Velcro on the back. Part numbers won’t match but apparently they all work the same. You have to take off the Velcro or it won’t fit in the above-tank slot.

Thanks for spot-on help,

Terry

Glad you handled that problem Terry.

How hard was it to get at the connector? One Brickie found that the connector
had oxidized causing the failure. With that in mind you might pack the connector
with dielectric silicone, and wrap with Coax-seal and black electric tape to
protect it from the elements.

Does the PEM come apart? Give the old one to some electronics maven to see if there's some discrete part such as a Triac that crapped out and can be easily fixed.

The connector is right in front. Easy to get to, but I had to get the PEM out of its bracket first because the cable did not have enough slack to pull it off when all was together. Other than being awkward to get at the thing was easy to replace. One little screw, jostle the thing loose, pop off the connector. Installation is the reverse.

Since you asked I opened up the PEM. It snaps together like lots of other things on these cars. There was salt crusted on the circuit board and maybe a teaspoon of loose salt sliding around. I assume it was salt, I couldn’t bring myself to taste it (the car went through 6 years Cleveland winters). No wonder it failed.

Anyway, once open I could not get the circuit board out. The external connector is part of the board and where it goes through the case is pretty solid. There may be a trick to it but I couldn’t see a non-destructive way to get the board out. I’d be happy to mail it to someone if they wanted to study it.

Thanks again for advice,

Terry

I think this car has no fuel pump relay but a PCM that controls the fuel pressure. The PCM is located just above the tank by rear passenger side.
You Tube is your friend here find a how to!

Sounds like the fuel pump controller (relay) problem I had with my 850.

You can check for NO fuel pressure at the rail when it wont start. That would indicate a bad fuel pump ccontroller or fuel pump.

If you do have fuel pressure and it wont start, look at the main fuel relay that
enables the injectors.

Good luck, Bill
