Open door policy/key-less entry trouble

I bought a 2003 V-70 quite a few year ago that only opened and locked through the key fob. The key fit in the door lock but did not turn. This past winter, my daughter, who has driven this vehicle to college and to her post graduation job for the past 4 years, reported that she was having trouble with the key-less entry system. She replaced the battery in the fob and that worked for about a month but the system is on the fritz again. We switched vehicles for the time being, and now I have to get the lock to work one way or the other (preferably both). I am not really sure just where to start with the key-less system. I have noticed that the red light on top of the dash does not illuminate, but an not sure if it blinks only when the vehicle is locked.Any thought about where to start with this system?

I suspect the door key doesn't work because of lack of use and corrosion. You could try a silicone spray, a couple of 2 second bursts, followed by inserting the key and gently trying to move the lock from side to side.

Thanks to all for the useful tips. Even after spraying, I couldn't get the key to fit into the lock and as I stated earlier, it hasn't worked since I bought the car few years ago. I picked up a door lock and key from a junk-yard V-70 reasonably, and installed the lock into my door handle assembly. It was a fairly simple operation. My daughter will have two keys on her ring now, but at least she can unlock the door manually if the fob doesn't work. She installed a new battery in the fob when this all started. I guess that I will take open it up and check/clean corrosion and put a volt meter on the battery to make sure. Thanks again for taking time to respond to my post!

Try the key for the glove box lock, is there one? If it doesn't work, the lock on the steering column may have been replaced. If the key works, the door handle lock may be 'jammed' and the fun begins.

Next, sit in the car and lock the doors and see if the red light blinks.

Get a new battery for the remote or test the current battery for 1.5V

On my 2003 V70 the red light on top of the dash blinks only when the doors are all locked.

If some the functions on the fob don’t work you might have to take it apart and clean the contacts inside.
