Interior window fogging V70-XC70 2016

Having a problem with all windows fogging up. At times while driving the windows may be clear, and then they suddenly and rapidly fogging. There have been times when my wife parks the car on very cold days during work, and when she returns at the end of he day the windshield is dripping/running wet with condensation. We run defrost, heat and turn off the recirculate and the problem still exists. Beautiful ride but this is an annoying problem. Thank you

You state that sometimes the windows go from clear to fogging very quickly and also that after sitting there will be condensation dripping from the windows.

These are similar symptoms that (to me) appear to be caused by different problems.

The condensation after sitting suggests that there's a bunch of water hiding in the cabin. You say the carpets are dry but have you checked the back seat carpets too? how about under the carpets? If you can find your way to pull back the carpet I think you'll find that the spongy foam backing the carpet is thick in places and is quite good at absorbing and holding water.

The rapid precipitation of fog on the windshield sounds like the AC is turning off unexpectedly leaving the fan to push some very very moist air through the defrost vents. Any reason why it would turn off?

Either way you have a lot of standing water in the cabin.

Find your water source and plug or unplug it. Sunroof drains are the easy place to start by opening the roof, finding the drain holes and pouring water down each one. Water should flow freely through the drains to the ground. If they're plugged you may find evidence of moisture on the A-pillar and dash where it meets the a-pillar at the door jamb.

I thank you all for the feedback. We have a great exclusive Volvo used car sales and repair service in Ithaca NY who will be searching for the problem next week. Hopefully all will pan-out then. Love the car but this problem is a giant pain in the backside.

One other thing. Turn the heat up to about 80 and open the driver's window about 1/2 inch to let the humid air out. Leave the vents in the auto mode.

Check the carpets, front and rear for dampness.

thanks klausC. Mats are dry, as well as carpeting. Will have to check out the
AC drain. we have been told that the windshield seal is inadequate from the factory and has to be resealed, but it doesn't seem that that problem would fog up the windshield and then all the other windows in the car so fast. it happens in a a minute or 2. When the defrost is on the vents can be circulating in the car, but when you turn on the mid and lower vents, the AC goes off, and has to be turned back on manually. Thanks again, KlausC

Back when I had a 1998 V70, I got rain water collecting in the overhead cabin light fixture. My wife complained that it dripped on her. The top of the windshield seal had gaps in it, visible under the black strip covering the top of the windshield. I solved that problem by injecting a 1/4 inch bead of silicon across the top of the glass, behind the rubber black strip.

Do check the forward sun roof drains.

Isn't it a bit cold to run the AC? Remember to crack the front windshield about 1/2 inch when driving...

Because you don't smell antifreeze, I suggest that the drain for the AC evaporator is clogged. Don't use recirc, that will make it worse. The AC will turn on during defrost mode.

"...Don't use recirc, that will make it worse. ..."

If you don't use recirc and it's really wet/humid outdoors, then you will continue to introduce more and more moist air into the cabin that the defrost (with A/C) has to try to dry out which could be a losing battle. If recirc is ON then the defrost with A/C will make the interior air drier and drier the longer it runs. At least that's what I've experienced.
