Power Steering Fluid Leak 850 1993

Hello again lads,

In the past couple months I've had to top off the power steering fluid a couple times in my 1993 GLT as I now have a leak.

I can't see any sign of the leak from examining things under the hood, so the problem is down below somewhere.

Is this an issue a layman like me can resolve? Where should I look underneath?

Or does she need to repaired by a professional?

Thanks!

If you don't have lots of oil on your driveway from some major leak.
There is some treatment that you can try that sometimes will stop a minor leak
by swelling up old leaky seals. They have it at all the parts stores. It's worth a try, get a turkey baster and remove as much of the old stuff first and try the additive. Maybe you'll get lucky.

My 95 850 was leaking through the seals and out in the area of the inner tie rods. Look for fluid there to confirm it’s coming through the seals.

I too used the turkey baster method but swapped out the fluid for Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. Emptied the reservoir a number of times replacing with the synthetic. After about a month my leak stopped!

          Thanks for the response.

I still have to climb underneath to do a proper inspection. The fluid is dripping on the ground, but not very fast. After the the level gets low I'll try the resealing additive or the Mobile synthetic ATF.

At this point, there won't be any expensive repairs on the old Volvo, so thanks for the suggestion.

My rack was leaking slowly too. Don’t think the siphon and replace method will work on serious leaks. Bought me another 3-4 years with the original rack until I sold the car. Which saved me a lot money!

Well, you need to get the car up on a rack to check all the components of the P/S system. If it's the pump or high pressure hoses leaking it's not too expensive. If it's from the steering rack it is expensive. I just did the rack on my 1993 with 220k miles. It was leaking from the tie rod boots, front right, behind the wheel. Not a DIY job. The local mechanic did it for $950. (parts, labor and wheel alignment). When you top up the P/S pump be sure to use ATF (transmission fluid). It's worth it if you are going to keep the car. A new rack really improved steering and handling. If your mechanic participates in Costco's repair program they give a 15% discount. Mine did and that brought the bill down to $800 plus tax.
