OK, my daughter is home again from school and I got to do a brake job on her 2004 V-70. When I finished the brakes, I took it for a test spin and the brakes worked wonderfully, but as I was headed back home the instrument cluster went dark. Not only was it not illuminated, but nothing worked; no speedometer, no tack, no fuel or temp gauge...nothing.When I got home, I turned the car off then restarted it and everything worked. Has anyone else experienced this phenomenon?

    Just a thought:
Has the dash gone out since ? Often when you have a failure of what you described I would suggest looking for a major connector for the wiring leaving
the dash and check it carefully.
    Good luck

thanks for the response. I am pretty sure that one, or more, of soldered components on the cluster circuit board has come loose. My daughter went back to school this morning and I won't get a chance to work on it again until next weekend. In the meantime, I am planning to gather the items (soldering wick, flux, etc...) that I will need to fix the board.

      Thanks again

some additional information... The instrument cluster worked just briefly before it wend dark again. I drove the car about 25 miles since the first incident and the cluster came on about four times but is dark once more. I replaced the electrical portion of the ignition switch, with a know good one,but nothing changed. I believe that the cluster needs to be repaired of replaced. Has anyone gone down that road?

so I've spent the time since my last posting educating myself on instrument cluster repair and removal techniques as well as soldering tutorials. I also have seen that there are services that do this sort of thing for around $100.00, and that there are re-manufactured clusters available for as little as $50.00. Has anyone had experience with either of these options? Would plugging in a cluster that is not original to my vehicle require a trip to the dealership for programming?
