Trunk lid supports S80 2008

Am I correct that, when you open the trunk lid and pick it up a little, it should rise up, powered by the gas struts, and not have a tendency to fall down? I think I may need to change out the struts.

I remain unable to figure out how struts replaced springs. There are, on the road today, cars from the 1950s or even earlier, still happily using the factory original springs on their hoods and trunk lids. You'll never be able to say that about 60-year-old vehicles that use gas struts.

Correct about springs, they seldom fail. Great in the engine compartment that needs to be slammed shut, not so good for the trunk which you do not want to slam every time it is opened.

OEM struts, not after market, allow for gentle opening and closing. The after market versions usually have too much strength required, like springs, and will beat the latch to death after a year or two.

Thanks. I put on some struts from FPC, and they seem nicely balanced: you have to pick up the lid a bit, and then it will move up on its own, but slowly. The installation was quick, and it's no longer wanting to fall down.

My S80 is a 1999, but with fresh struts the trunk not only stays up, it is hard to pull down to close.

You are correct about springs having near-infinite life. But they do take up a lot more room. Like all design choices, there is a compromise that needs to be made.

Fortunate aftermarket struts are widely available and not too expensive. They will last 10+ years.

    Hope this helps!
