Klunky transmission improvement V70-XC70

My wagon suffered from the AW transmission malady, klunky upshifts and downshifts. I did notice this happened only after the transmission warmed up, so i figured i would try a trans cooler. I added Seafoam TansTune and drove the wagon around 250 miles, then did a trans fluid dump and flush, added a Derale 8000 cooler and a Magnefine filter on the return line from the radiatior. There is still a klunk every now and then when the weather is very hot, but the improvement is noticeable. The most annoying was the shift from 3rd to 4th and that has all but disappeared. Car has about 150K miles, i recommend trying this before commiting to the "open heart surgery" change of the valve body. Hope it helps someone!!

You can also used Toyota Type IV fluid, which is JWS3309 compatible, and usually a more reasonable price.

I have just started having the same problem (erratic shifting in stop and go slow traffic) and have been looking for transmission fluid on line... While doing this I found from a Volvo supplier for Volvo fluid item #1161540 there was also a listing of fluid item #31256775 also by Volvo that is specifically suppose to help this problem. This fluid is expensive; list over $50 per quart and sold for $35. Not sure if this is an additive or replacement fluid...??? Is there anyone familiar with this item

      JWS3309 or JWS3324 V70-XC70

Volvo ATF #31256775 translates to JWS3324 ATF.

Starting in 2001 through 2010, the 5 speed automatics were directed to use JWS3309 ATF. With the newer 6 speed trannies, JWS3324 is used.

The JWS3324 has a reduced viscosity, which is supposed to reduce 'clunking' when the ATF heats up.

The JWS3324 spec fluid can be used in the earlier 5 speed, instead of the JWS3309. A search for JWS3324 will show that it can be bought for around $9/quart.

Mobile also sells a 3324 version.

The ATF for the 5 speed automatic transmission is 3309 fluid. You could buy it a Walmart.

Using a cleaner before you flush, is up to you.

Thanks Klaus for your reply. I ended up ordering the new product that is suppose to solve the problem... Also it was much cheaper than I expected, with a coupon that I had. $60.00 per 4L delivered... This is what you when you have a lack of knowledge in transmissions... Thanks again for your help, will do the Walmart thing the next time... jim
