Ignition Coils XC90 2007

Vehicle has about 140K mileage. Got the "slow down or shift up" warning message on a 2007 3.2L XC90. Immediately after, the vehicle misfired, ran rough and died. Significant puff of white smoke and very acrid smell external to the cabin. Engine would turn over but not start. Traced issued to blown ignition coil #2. Physical failure of top potted area (side of coil upper body split) and melt down. 20A fuse feeding coils went with it. After a new set of plugs and a new coil and fuse vehicle runs fine and made a 94 mile run with no issues. Problem that remains and is being chased is not able to read any codes from the OBDII port. Don't think it is the reader, but we get the message that cable or hook up is not good (reader after self check defaults to the "8888" reading.
My comment/question is; I am wondering if I think the coil just gave up the ghost or something blew the coil. My initial thought, because only one went that it was just the coil internally shorting and blowing. Anyone have any comments/thoughts in this area. I'd also be interesting in any thoughts on the OBDII issue. Look forward to your posts. Thanks and happy motoring.

    Ignition Coils XC90 2007

This is my first encounter of a coil 'melt down', usually they just crack and loose power. Get another coil and keep it in the glove box or trunk.

I don't mind coil overs, just that they don't have enough air flow over them to keep them from getting too hot and breaking the plastic. Remember, the original single coil design always had the coil on the cool fender, with a large heat sink.

As for the code reader, what model is it? Some of the older models will not work with the CAN systems used in new cars.

Keeping it running is better than buying new
