CEL reappears V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 - 250K Miles

This week the CEL reappeared and is on again, but I think for a different reason. The earlier CEL instance was three weeks ago, when a fouled spark plug caused a misfire. Plugs were replaced and solved the problem.

The light appeared during normal commute driving. Any performance difference is almost imperceptible except for slightly different shifting and not as sharp throttle response. Also, when the throttle is blipped at idle while in Park, instead of returning to idle the engine will stall. Otherwise, car idles and drives OK.

I think the car is still running on its original O2 sensors, so that might be a contributor. The ETM was dealer campaign-replaced early on in the car’s service as I recall, since the original ETM was problematic.

I’ll take the car in Monday to have codes read, but O2 sensors and/or ETM are what I’m guessing at the moment.

Any thoughts?

    Follow up:

Had the car in the shop with this code on the invoice: "P119 / History MAF / Fuel System Lower Limit"

MAF checks out OK, so checked for vacuum leaks. After some troubleshooting, there was a small cracked (original) rubber hose from intake manifold to MAP Sensor circuit joint, which sits above the fan shroud. Replaced hose - cleared code.

Here's a vacuum diagram for my car that's under the hood: https://www.autopartsapi.com/eEuroparts.com/images/parts/lg_d4a24495-9fe2-4de3-a04d-9bd49e342e71.jpg

Suspect hose is the solid black line from the RH side of intake manifold to the MAP Sensor.

    Good to Go!

Technician wasn't too concerned about age and mileage on the original O2 sensors. His opinion is they're good until gas mileage drops or CEL illuminates. But from the preventive maintenance perspective, can't argue with replacing them sooner rather than later.

Stop by any auto parts store and get the generic codes read. Do not erase them if you plan to take it to a dealer. At your mileage and age, it could be anything.

      Ps,

At this age and mileage, I think it’s probably wise to replace the original O2 sensor(s) anyway as preventative maintenance. I’m happy they’ve worked this long. The car has been well maintained so that helps.

If it was just a loose gas cap, it will take about 3 drives to clear the CEL.

The O2 sensors don't live forever. Rule of thumb for replacement is 120K miles for the front, the rear O2 sensor lasts much longer. The sensors usually have the pre-heat element wear out in short, cold engine trips. Long distance highway miles are good for the sensors.

      Thanks Klaus,

When doing Saturday morning inspection, noticed that the gas cap wasn’t totally locked down (wasn’t ratcheted). Corrected that and the CEL hasn’t gone off. It might if driven a while. Meanwhile will get the codes read.
