Check Engine Light on, flashing intermittently. Rough running XC90 2004

XC90 2.5T AWD 2004 w/ 194K miles. Driving on the interstate today at about 75 mph. On a long uphill, the car kicked into a lower gear, running fine. I noticed the check engine light flashed on and off, then the car started running rough. Got off the interstate and limped home, about 40 miles at 40-50 mph. Check engine light remained on, car seemed to be misfiring or missing a cylinder. On short uphils, the light would flash, but mostly just remained on. I am concerned. Any thoughts about where I should start? Coils? Plugs? Mechanic?

Probably a coil, but getting the codes read would be the first step. A flashing CEL indicates multiple misfire, but you need to know which cylinders are the problem.

I could also be a fuel pump problem, not delivering enough fuel when going up hill. But, then on the 'flat' the misfire should have gone away.

As for a bad coil or two, once you have the codes read, swap the coil to a 'good' cylinder and its corresponding coil to the bad cylinder. If the code moves to the 'good' cylinder, you know the coil died.

I don't think these could be the original coils, not at 195K. Check the WWW for best bargains/value. Dealers are a bit expensive.

      2000 V70 SE - AW5 - Denso - 250K miles

By coincidence, I'm in a similar situation on a road trip. Cruising at 70 mph and the CEL illuminated - started running rough; CEL sometimes flashing, sometimes not. Drove 25 more miles to destination and spent the night.

No scanner on board but have tools, spare plugs and ignition coil. In the hotel parking lot this morning, isolated the dead cylinder, swapped out the coil and the cylinder was still dead. Pulled the plug (just coming up on 20K miles), swapped with a used spare plug, and the engine is now firing on all cylinders.

The CEL is still on. Will it go off after driving a bit? Really don't want to disconnect battery to clear codes because of computer stored mileage, fuel consumption figures, etc. But I will disconnect later if needed. For now, continuing the trip this morning.

      Thanks,

If the engine remains trouble free, the error code should go away on its own after a few on/off cycles.

Second vote for getting the fault codes first. THEN start start spending money on it.

      Thanks Klaus,

Would you recommend replacing all coils, or just the failing one (or two)?

Logic dictates to replace them all. After all, coil failure is common and a set is roughly the same price as a tow.

For me, cheapness dictates that I'll only replace the bad ones). I took an '01 V70 to 268K miles with 4 original coils. The 5th went flaky at some point north of 200K.

If it is a bad coil, replace it and get a spare. Depending on the age of the coils and what is in your wallet, you could buy 5.
