Daily Driver Selection

I'm asking for advice on buying a used Volvo wagon for a daily driver. It has to be ready to go-I'm too old for a project--and a wagon. I can't afford a good 240, can't find a 940, and don't know anything about FWD Volvos. I've owned at least a dozen Volvos over the years, but they have all been RWD. I don't want a Turbo, and want something that is dependable and doesn't need to go to the shop all the time. The closest Volvo dealer is 1 hour away and the local mechanics have trouble with Fords and Chevys. Would appreciate and advice. I'm prepared to spend what I have to in order to get something good, but would like to stay around $5000. Maybe a little more.

    When I totaled my 1992 745 wagon ("Sally") I found myself in your situation. I was drug kicking and screaming over to the FWD world, ending up with 2003 V70, 5 cylinder, non-turbo, with about 155,000 miles on it. I immediately dumped about $1000 into shaping it up. All in all it has been pretty good. You sit a bit lower to the ground than a 240/740 but the ride is quieter and smoother than the RWD's, gets pretty darn good mileage (like 22/30), and is fairly peppy for a non turbo. If you get too late of a model, you will get a six cylinder which will cost you a bit in mileage but maybe you don't drive enough miles that it would matter. Don't fret over making a turbo vs non-turbo choice as long as you find a car that fills the bill otherwise. I would say that you probably don't need AWD in SC so personally I would avoid one - that is unless you run across one that is low mileage, works perfectly, and is too good a buy to say "no".

      My situation is very similar. When my 93 240 SW became unreliable due to a hard to find, one year only ECU, I ended my five decade long love affair with 240's and purchased a low mileage 2003 V70. The vehicle has been very reliable aside from quirks such as the message board display and the driver side window regulator. The car rides nice, but I did find it a bit of an adjustment to deal with the substantial blind spot, on the passenger side of the car, created by the combination of sloping roof-line and large side view mirror (unlike the 240 series). I do all of my own repairs, and one of the nice things that I find about owning this particular model is that there seems to be an ample supply of parts available in the local u-pick-it-yards. From my observations the lions share of these bone yard beauties seem to be turbo models---just sayin'

    If you don't want to play mechanic, you will not find a reliable car with less than 120K miles for under $5,000. Any car.

    I don't see why a $5,000 budget shouldn't get you a decent 245. I don't know about TN but we visit our two kids in Winston-Salem a few times a year and I always check on Craigslist and usually see at least a few 245's between W-S, Charlotte and northern SC. Don't spend your entire budget on the car itself -- always leave yourself a reserve of 10-20 percent for the unforeseen repairs that will always be needed on a used car.       I've looked for about 6 months, using 1990 as the oldest. Haven't found anything that wouldn't require a lot of money to get in good shape. The market for 245s has skyrocketed. And, although the red block is a fantastic engine, I don't want anything with much more than 125000 miles on it. What do you think about the 850 wagon?

        I owned a 240 for 11 years and, until recently, an 850 wagon for 8 years. If maintained, an 850 can last as long as a 240. A 240 is more likely to last longer than an 850 or early V70 (updated 850) because they require regular maintenance to achieve high miles. Whereas a 240 can be abused and still might achieve high miles. Sold 240 at 300k, 850 at 250k. IMHO both were starting to tire before they reached 250k. Demanding more frequent work and expense once they reached that stage. I won't try to run any car more than 200-230k again. Not worth the expense and the time at that stage of their lives.

        Oh, don't be afraid of the turbos. They are strong and will last forever if you use synthetic oil in them. Good idea to use synthetic in the all the 5 cylinder engines anyway. They will last longer with synthetic...
