Rear Wheels aren't turning :-( V70-XC70 2007

All,

I'm days away from getting this car finally on the road (2007, XC70, 198k miles), and after cleaning all the rust off of all the brake rotors I decided to check and see if the rear wheels spin as I'm starting to believe PO had zero experience with an AWD car.

Sure enough I started the car, E-brake off and I slid the car into R and stepped out of the car. Front wheels move but rear wheels do not.

I do the same with D, and I get the same result.

Can you say CRAP!!!!!

Wasn't planning on changing the Haldex or rear differential fluid just yet, but it looks like I'm going to now.

Any ideas as to where I should start in diagnosing the problem?

Additional information is that the info screen tells me that "Anti skid service required", not sure if this is related or not. I'm so new to this car that I have no idea, but will dig in to fix this, cause that's how I roll.

Thanks in advance,

Matt

    UPDATED: Rear Wheels aren't turning :-( V70-XC70 2007

Well, the wheels still aren't turning, but the driveshaft is out and I know for sure now that the transfer case (bevel/angle gear) are fine.

The problem most likely is that I have a stripped carrier gear that transfers power from the transmission to ring gear, which then drives the pinion gear for the driveshaft to the rear Haldex unit.

I've concluded this as I just removed a used transfer case from a 2006 XC70 at my local PNP and now understand how this thing works.

Plan is to rebuild this unit with new seals and to see what shape the bearings are in. Currently they feel fine, but one never knows until you get in there. I'm also going to add a drain plug so that changing its oil will be a whole lot easier in the future.

I'll post more once I've rebuilt the unit, and then after I've re-installed it in the car.

    Later,

    Matt

Some early Volvo AWD owners say that they remove the drive shaft and use FWD.

You might try that for a while to see if you can sort the rest of the car out.

Unless you race in the rain, AWD is not much of an asset this time of year.

We have a base '12 XC70 with FWD - it has the same rear wheel hubs as the AWD models. This car was a replacement for the US V70.

    Matt,

Do you know if the driveshaft (prop shaft) was turning or not? Knowing that would help you zero in on the point of failure.

      QUESTION: Rear Wheels aren't turning :-( V70-XC70 2007

Would a bevel gear from an XC90 work if I can't find an XC70 bevel gear in the local PNP?

If it will, what am I looking for to see if it is bad or not?

      Thanks,

      Matt

      CONFIRMED: Rear Wheels aren't turning :-( V70-XC70 2007

      Chris,

Just checked prop shaft and it is not turning at all.

Now I seem to have all sorts of ABS warnings that are coming on, just great!

Where would be the best place to start, Bevel gear or Haldex?

      Matt

        CONFIRMED: Rear Wheels aren't turning :-( V70-XC70 2007

I wouldn't worry too much about the ABS warnings at this point. Most likely they're showing up because the system is sensing that the front wheels are turning and rear wheels aren't.

As for what parts can be sourced from what model cars, I would have no idea. The one and only 4WD/AWD vehicle I ever owned was a 1966 Jeep Gladiator pickup - no wimpy little Haldex unit on that baby!

This parts list seems to indicate that both the XC70 and XC90 use the same bevel gear and Haldex coupler (clutch) for years 2003-2007, but don't take that as gospel without further research:

Other, more AWD savvy people, may chime in with advice as to what you should do next.

Also, you might want to go post your problem here where there is more participation:

        Good luck.

      Rear Wheels aren't turning :-( V70-XC70 2007

      Chris,

I do not, but that is the first thing on my list to try tonight when I get off work. Didn't think about it last night as I was too distraught. If it is, then I'm going to breathe a little easier, but not much.

I'll let you know later today.

      Matt
