Honest mechanic needed (San Diego area) S60

My sister bought her son an 07 S60 recently. Neither her nor my nephew know jack squat about cars.

They bought the car without knowing if the timing belt was changed (and there was no sticker indicating it had been changed). Also the transmission felt "rough" on the drive home from buying it.

I suggested they take it to a mechanic and have him (or her) check it out.
So they've asked me for some advice (I own an 850). While I think I can handle a fair amount of the issues, I can't help with finding them a mechanic.

Do any of you (who live in the San Diego/Poway area) have any trustworthy mechanics that you don't mind sharing?

Thanks in advance.

Timing belt for California cars is 150K miles.

If I'm reading this right, the vin on my sisters car doesn't indicate it's the California car like you said.

      Thats the vin.

I'm reading the key for the Vin right, #'s 6 and 7 should be engine code. 39 would imply California, yet mine says 59.

And # 8 (emissions) should be 0, but it is 2.

So....that seems to tell me the timing belt is at 120, not 150k.

      Am I reading this right?

Initially sold east of CA? The year in the VIN also equates to a 2007??? A CARFAX might be helpful? Check the build date in the driver's door.

120K for Tbelt is correct, thank the lawyers for not having a belt last as long for the other states (same belt).

The next time my car is due for a new timing belt I'm going to move to one of the PZEV states so I can keep driving it without the belt breaking.

      Thanks, I let her know.

Why would it being a California car matter? I know they have different DEQ standards, is that why?

LOL, an HONEST mechanic? You mean someone who knows Volvos and is reasonably priced. If you look in the 'shops' at the top pull down menu, that might help.

I have gone to a dealer and had him do a 'prepurchase' check. They usually charge an hour's worth of labor, list everything under the sun, and hope you go to them for expensive service.

You didn't say how many miles on the car. The California models don't change the Tbelt for at least 120K, OR, 10 years. So it sounds like it is due...

Have sister or her son find the yellow tranny dipstick and check the color of the fluid. It is supposed to be red.

      Thanks for the input.

I told them to check the transmission fluid and sent her links to show how.

It has 121K on it. I will let her know about the prepurchase option.
