2001 V70 Battery/Elec Issues V70-XC70

So a couple months ago I started having issues with tail lights, then for a while one headlight on low beam was out, then it came back, then the reverse lights - then the sunroof was intermittent, then the rear wiper stopped

Jumped it once after a dead battery - fine, but still with quirks

Two weeks later, after cold spell - completely dead battery, tried to jump - nothing

Got new battery - while installing, noticed water in the well next to the battery/under the driver taillights/fusebox

Installing new battery, got spark when I connected neg as last step. But then locks made sound, put key in, got the ding, turned key, two clicks come from back of car and dead again

What's up? Is it water getting in? A short? The line going to the front? Fuses/relays? Have a good mechanic but want to be informed before going in. They do all kinds of cars so not sure how well versed in Volvo electrical they are

What kind of ignition switch do you have?

If it is a key switch, try wiggling it around - perhaps the switch is bad.

could explain a new battery that appears dead.

I don't understand how you got water in the well. Nor how a battery can completely discharge in a few seconds without causing a fire or blowing a computer.

Had you hooked the battery to the positive terminal in the engine compartment, you wouldn't have needed to crawl through the car. The positive terminal is on the passenger side, look for it.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

The "self-healing headlight" could be weakened H7 plugs. Crack the plastic away and give the connector a squeeze so it conducts better.

What issues did the tail lights exhibit?

What controls the reverse light? Is it the PNP switch? I think they get dirty. Everyone tries rowing the gear range selector lever rapidly to clean it.

You like playing with car radios etc., correct? Did you mess with something? Do you leave the windows open?

    Battery & Charging troubleshooting V70-XC70

Don't leave the ignition on when removing battery cables, remove the key first.

You need to start by cleaning the battery terminals with a battery terminal
wire brush, and make sure the battery terminals are shiny clean, and then tighten, including the piggy backed wire on the plus terminal. (10MM wrench)
Check that the electrolyte in each battery cell is up, add only distilled
water to top up. (Get it at any drugstore)
Then measure DC volts at the battery terminals: motor off, and motor running.
You should see about +12.6 DCV motor off, and +14.0 DCV motor on.

    Post back with your results

So you think it's a matter of the terminals not being super clean? Should I worry that there was a spark when I connected the battery (when connecting the negative)- actually, it was a brand new battery I just bought.

What do you think accounts for all the electrical issues I have had (intermittent issues with headlights, sunroof, taillights, rear wiper). Replaced fuses AND bulbs to no avail. Relays?

Had to install battery by going over back seat since the tailgate wouldn't open without battery power

BTW - I am a youtube DIYer - as in, everything I do, I do by watching how-to vids on youtube. But true, I skipped the wire brush/baking soda slurry cleaning of terminals

Yep! You have an assortment of electrical problems that you outlined.
You should follow the troubleshooting steps one by one.
Post back after you service the battery terminals and report the DC voltages.

        Bill
