Right CV joint circlip open - but joint removal failing 850 1995

Picture is of open circlip. I read to open it with a 8mm drift, so I did. I can have it open even more as it doesn't close anymore so it can be pushed open a bit more by wifewith a pick while I hammer away. Joint still does not come off with hammer taps on bronze drift even when circlip is help open a little wider. I'm hoping to replace the boots before they fail. This car has manual trans. I'm out of ideas. Bigger vise, stronger wacks . The 23 year old boot hasn't failed yet, it would be terrible to admit defeat and just put it back into the car.

    This is why mechanics prefer to replace the entire axle. You might have to buy a new circlip if it has been stretched too far.

    I haven't done this procedure, and probably never will. But my understanding would have had me replacing both boots. Remove the inner boot first, then remove the outer boot by sliding it off the transmission end of the axle. A bit more grease mess, but less chance for error and no need to decouple the CV.

      I did also buy the inner boot kit from volvo (over a year ago) 850 1995

      So the Klaus method is an option. On the inner, one video showed it as easy to disassemble but my Haynes manual mentioned unbending a few tabs. I hate unbending. There is some buzz that re manufacturing a joint bites into some of the hardened metal so I'm making that attempt to keep my OEM stuff in top shape.

      After this I'm going to be afraid to tackle the left side.

        I did also buy the inner boot kit from volvo (over a year ago) 850 1995

        Once you get the joint past the circlip slot it will come off. FCP genuine Volvo boot kit comes with new grease, boot, new ciclip, new axle nut. You can replace inner boot by sliding it off shaft of the joint which you just took off.

    Hold both tips of the circlip open as wide as possible with circlip pliers and hammer on the joint until it gets past the slot for the circlip
