2007 XC90 AM Radio No Sound -- is there some sort of mute I might not be aware of? XC90 2007

This car is actually FWD, if it makes a difference. Has the 3.2l i6.

We just bought this 2007 XC90, like three days ago. Today, I was paging through the stations in the car's stereo -- FM stations were coming through fine. But when I switched to AM, there was total silence. The radio already had several AM stations saved -- three of which I listen to regularly, so I know it was set to the correct frequencies, at least. But across the AM dial there is no sound.

Got any ideas what to look for? Is my new-to-me radio toast on the AM side? I sure hope not.

This is a good time to start looking for a replacement radio. The AM going away is common with the HU units and there is no 'fix'. I would get one with a nice touch screen, back-up camera, bluetooth, etc.

Hmm . . . so a common problem, eh? Okay, then. Klaus can you recommend a radio model or model number? I don't know what I should conduct a search on. Also, any tips on getting into the center console without breaking plastic and screwing things up?

The above might help. Crutchfield.com should have plug&play that fit exactly. Shop around when you find something you like...

Thanks. I know a huge amount more about this topic than I did when I wrote my earlier message. And I think, based on this info, that Crutchfield might actually be a good way to proceed. Thanks for the reminder.

Update: Crutchfield was a bust. They don't have anything that will fit my car. TBH, I don't happen to know if my car has 12 or 8 speakers, with or without a subwoofer, with or without navigation (but I suspect it doesn't have navigation if that means GPS), so I selected 8 speakers, no sub, no navigation, and was informed they have nothing that fits. I went back and tried a couple other options, but the response was the same.

Well, I've been reading up on this whole issue. Apparently this problem I'm experiencing is not uncommon. And apparently, a popular fix is to replace the radio with a Double Din unit that provides a touch-screen display. Some models have GPS built in so it would function just like a more modern setup. Others even have support for rear-facing cameras, which is another nice, current feature. All this is in addition to a modern suite of features, which include Bluetooth, a cd player that supports several different formats, SD card, USB, aux mini phone jack, etc.

I'll have to get a frame kit that holds the radio and provides a flush mounting surface. They vary in price from $30 to $100. No idea why the $100 one costs so much. The radio varies in price from about $100 to $160. Amazon carries some name brand ones, so I'll probably buy from them.

So, have any of you performed this same sort of "upgrade?"

Hey! thanks for the link Klaus.
I'm not sure if I would have attempted DIY if an aftermarket harness had already been set up. Bluetooth, steering wheel control, dash kit, etc. That said, I think Best Buy Geeks are $100, or there might be a local shop that you can bring the parts. I wasn't in love with Crutchfield even though they are a good co. I don't know why 'won't fit' would happen,(same or similar for me) since it seems the current units accommodate the functions that are in demand, and the dash would have plenty of room (double check). Wouldn't 'with nav' be the little screen that pops up out of the dash? This stereo stuff seems to take a ton of research, and there are also surely many folks out there eager to sell you stuff. Also dash kits seem to vary in price a lot. This looks good: https://www.carid.com/2007-volvo-xc90-stereo-installation-dash-kits/ This too: https://www.amazon.com/Metra-99-9228B-Single-Double-Dash/dp/B017HTT1KG/ref=pd_cp_107_1?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B017HTT1KG&pd_rd_r=KZTRT4FVZEXNRNXWBQWJ&pd_rd_w=u4EXK&pd_rd_wg=p7OGA&psc=1&refRID=KZTRT4FVZEXNRNXWBQWJ But Amazon has a different one listed for $99.(yikes) I think Scosche might be better quality than Metra but not 100% sure. The console section is not hard to remove on my V70, especially now that I have done it more than 5 times :) Plastic bone tools are great, and there might be a Volvo publication similar to this one http://accessories.volvocars.com/en-se/V70(00-08)/InstallationInstruction/Document/VCC-161490-1/2006/D5/Automatic/R.H.D/V70_(00-08)%2C_2006
All this said, in my old 850, the AM had trouble. I cleaned the antenna connection plug behind the HU, with some temp success. And, had read that the connection to the antenna can have problems further back but I never pursued. Good luck, Happy hunting, let us know how it goes -Bill

And the antenna adapter in on Amazon
