Automatic transmission drain plug crush washer V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 SE NA AW55-50SN Denso 248K miles

About to do a sump dump on the AW5 transmission, with Mobil 3309 ATF. Question about the drain plug crush washer: Where can I find a new one, or is it the same size as the crankcase drain plug?

Thank you,

FCP's price is how to buy 'em (combined with a parts order is better).
Filter specials (3 for X$ etc.) commonly include the washers.
RockAuto's offering is $0.07 more each w/min 15 unit purchase.

A friend found a bar of aluminum and machined me a stack of them. They came out thick.
I rub 'em on some sintered brass and manmade diamond abrasive cloth to restore them.
They work perfectly with the only difference being that you don't get as much "crush feel" as the thinner ones. It's cool to have custom made washers.
Yes, I'm that thrifty (cheap?).

Here are the Volvo part numbers for the tranny plug crush washers:

Geartronic 6-speed: 977751 (23.5 mm o.d.)

AW5 (4 fwd + R): 30713220 (26.5 mm o.d.)

When ordering a fluid replacement kit, pay attention to which washer part number you get.
Using an oversized washer will result is a drip leak.

That’s good advice, thanks. Just finished a successful ATF drain and fill a few days ago on 2000 V70 SE w AW-5 series (5-speed auto gearbox on this model). I can confirm it’s the same size as crankcase drain plug. Didn’t measure it, but I’m guessing it’s the larger one. I can measure later.

Would it not be simpler to refer to it as an 18mm ?
That's the sizing the industry uses i.e. 14mm for the family's Hondas and 18mm for Volvo oil and trans.

That would make sense too. 18mm ID. 24mm OD. FCP lists the washer as 18 x 24 x 1.5mm.

Interesting to read the product reviews for this part on FCP site: https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-drain-plug-washer-850-c70-s40-s60-s70-s80-v50-v70-xc#desc

Any reason to be dealing with the plug rather than the flush method of the top hose at the radiator?

Good question. Why don't you flush and leave the plug alone.

This is planned to be a simple dump and fill procedure. Four quarts out the bottom, then four quarts back in at the dipstick tube. If it was to be a complete change of gearbox oil, would use the multiple step two-quarts-at-a-time "Gibbons" flush procedure with ~ 12 quarts. I think the transmission is in good enough condition (i.e., no symptoms, relatively clean & reddish fluid) to do the simple sump dump and fill as preventive maintenance.

Btw, I did research and found out that the AW5 drain plug crush washer is the same one used for the crankcase drain plug.

Dump and fill is best done with a cold tranny. Park it on ramps the night before if you can, or jackstand it without starting the engine. The ATF will drain overnight, into the sump.

While I would measure the amount drained and refill with that amount, you could also check the level on the dipstick and match that when refilling so long as the engine isn't started.

Yes, the crush washer is the same size.

Be careful about ordering the correct tranny plug washer. If your XC70 has the 6-speed Geartronic
Transmission, you want the 22 mm o.d. washer. There is a larger 26 mm washer for the older AW automatic tranny (4 fwd + R). So, it depends which transmission you have.

Why not order both diameters, so you'll be fully prepared during your pan drain procedure?

Yes I'm with you Klaus, a cold ATF drain overnight while on jackstands. No burns either, that way. I'll plan on not starting the engine and fill back to the same mark on the dipstick. Might measure too, for backup.

Thanks,

FWIW, unless I know the crush washer has been over-torqued by some Brutus before me, I reuse it.

I do true it up by rubbing it against a coarse file before reinstalling.
I've done this for years and haven't had any leaks. Actually do it at every engine oil change too.

That’s good advice. New aluminum washers are inexpensive when they can be sourced; so there are a couple of good options there. I know that used copper washers can be filed and smoothed too, but they need to be annealed every other time or so.
