Rear window washer / spray V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 (P80), 245K miles

Car had been sitting for about two weeks (temperature above freezing the whole time). Rear washer / nozzle spray worked OK before parking.

Now, when washer button is pushed on the right hand stalk, the rear wiper moves but there is no washer spray discharge from the tailgate nozzle. Can hear the reservoir pump spinning when engaged. Front windshield washer and wipers work OK.

Likely the rear nozzle is clogged, or is something else going on as a possibility? If a clog, any hints about how to clear the small nozzle?

Thanks for any ideas.

After waxing the car, I clear the nozzles with a safety pin.

Before you tear up the car, pull the wiper away from the window so it doesn't touch the glass. Then try holding the washer button down for 20-30 seconds or so. If there is still no spray, then either the delivery tube became disconnected or the nozzle is completely blocked.

Take a look around the right side of the trunk and the ground, checking for any fluid.

I had thought that the washer nozzle was in the painted portion above the glass. That means you only need to remove the upper trim.

      Update and Final:

With key on and rear washer energized and pumping, fluid was streaming from the upper right side rear compartment interior molding and the right side rear speaker cover.

Removed speaker cover and upper molding. Close examination showed rubber hose had separated from a plastic pipe union routed behind the speaker, before the hose snakes up to the roof and through the right side tailgate hinge to the nozzle. Reconnected the hose - plastic pipe union and tested; the rear washer-wiper is functioning normally now.

Suspect what happened is that the washer hose binded up in the tailgate hinge with repeated opening/closing, and the binding pulled the hose out from the plastic pipe union behind the speaker. Might have to apply some rubber lubricant at the hinge point; maybe that will lessen the rubber hose binding from tailgate action.

      Thanks for the tips Klaus!

    Update:

Looks like replacement nozzles are available and not expensive, so I’ll try removal and replacement. Any one familiar with the procedure to remove the nozzle? Looks like the tail gate trim must be removed, and then removing a clip that anchors the nozzle to the rear window glass and frame.
