Catalytic converter catastrophe? V70-XC70 1998

I just got some bad news; my beloved 1998 V70 AWD (206K miles) may need a new catalytic converter. I am told that it may be as much as a $2500.00 job (the muffler shop I got the news from will not do the job--they are not trying to make money from me). At 206K miles, the car will also need a new timing belt soon (around 210K). The car runs very well--strong engine and transmission, good A/C, etc.--and I was hoping to keep it running, but I feel I may be at a tipping point; a $3000 investment in a 20-year-old car seems a risk. For all I know, other things could fail soon as well, such as transmission, bevel gears, etc.

So I am seeking advice from the wisdom of Brickboard. I have thought of perhaps buying a similar V70 being sold as a parts car and swapping out the converter, then junking the parts car (would a converter from a non AWD, non-turbo model fit my light-pressure turbo?), looking for a used converter at a pick-n-pull (though the muffler guy told me that generally those sell right away because of precious metals), paying to keep the car running, driving it until it no longer runs, or selling it before the problems get worse (of course, I would tell a buyer about the cat and the timing belt).

Best car I've ever owned, but I supposed nothing lasts forever. Thanks.

Don't panic yet. An aftermarket cat might only be a couple hundred dollars and then you'll sell the used one. Suggest you look at "DEC" brand, maybe price out at FCP. I like the FCP lifetime warranty.

There are other 'cheaper' cats that work in your state. These usually come with a 2 year guarantee and life expectancy of 5 years.

But, is this diagnosis valid? What are the engine codes? Have you replaced the O2 sensors lately? How about the vacuum lines, do any of them leak?

As for the Tbelt... Have you ever replaced the water pump, if so, then you don't need a new one. You have the hydraulic tensioner, if that is original then it should be replaced along with the tensioner roller and free roller. The Sbelt and roller should also be swapped.

That is a great option! The diagnosis is not based on engine codes, but a rattle that disappears once the system warms up. Knocking on the Cat Converter reproduced the rattle, so the muffler guy thinks there may be deterioration in the converter that will only get worse.

O2 sensors not replaced, and they are causing a fault, but my Volvo mechanic says not a necessary replacement if the car is running OK, which it seems to be.

I don't think I have ever replaced the water pump, though I think I drilled a hole in it once due to a whine. Does that sound right? That may have been on a 740T. The timing belt is suggested every 70K miles. Serpentine belt has been done fairly recently.

In any event, it's nice to know that there is something out there that is NOT a $2500 replacement.

There are places that buy used cat converters, up to $100 for a Volvo cat. Remember that when it is replaced.

BTW, replace both O2 sensors when replacing the cat.

AND, make sure it is the cat rattling, not the heat shield.
