850 Cat Converter issues 850

I replaced the Cat converter 5 years ago in May with a Bosal from FCP.
The warranty is for 5 years. (A triumph of engineering and marketing)
Now the pipes for and aft of the Cat unit look very rusty and the rear O2 sensor
nipple that's welded in, has rusted at the weld. This could be easily welded
but there's a cross member bracket in the way that needs to come out.
4 hex bolts that thread into hidden captive nuts somewhere in the floor assembly.
Two of the bolts wont come out, and just spin.

Can those nuts be seen perhaps by pulling the passenger seat and carpet ?

Thanks, Bill

The protective plate under the cat is secured by 4 bolts. The welded nut on the other side of the body is directly under the front seats. The center jack point is halfway between the bolts.

I am too lazy to pull MY front seat and peel back the carpeting to tell you exactly where the weld nut is, that is your job. Get a 14mm and lift up the seat and the forward edge of the rear carpet.

You can drive around with the protective plate removed, just not on rainy days or off road where the dangling rear O2 sensor wire will catch on something and rip it off.

The big question is, is the captive nut spinning or are the threads just stripped? Either way try driving a screwdriver tip in between the bolt head (or washer) and the cross member. Then see if you can unscrew the bolt while prying down with the screwdriver.

      Thanks Chris,

I tried that with no joy.

Maybe someone knows and will chime in?

I also wonder if anyone tried painting their new Cat converter with Cold zinc at installation? It might add some longevity to the Bosal cat that didn't survive near as well as the OEM unit that went 15 years.

You should be able to tell if the bolts go into the floor pan (where they would like be accessible from above) or into a frame member (where the nut would be hidden). It's just a bummer that you would have to remove the seat and carpet to gain access.
