fuel mileage, 3.2l XC90

I recently bought a 2008 XC90 with 95K miles on it. The text message window on the dash indicates a fuel consumption figure of 15.8l/100km, which is about 17.5 miles per Imperial gallon or 14.6m/USgal. My 3/4 ton GMC with a 6 litre engine gets better mileage than that!
Three things: I have no idea over what period that figure was calculated, how to zero the calculation so that I can start afresh, and what a realistic gas consumption figure might be. Can anyone help me?
thanks!
John D

While you are displaying the fuel consumption average, press the reset button on the stalk to zero it out and start over. You can do the same with the average speed.

Because the car is 10 years old, it is time to start checking the vacuum lines for cracks and wear.

Thanks Klaus, I got it re-zeroed. I'll check the lines, although we live in a temperate area here and rubber does not dry out the way it does down south.
Thanks
JD

I'll be in your 'temperate' climate next week, checking out the 'Gardens' and taking a CN train ride.

Not to brag, but my daughter used the 1995 850T to commute last week, 45 minutes each way. I zeroed out the mpg and a week later it read 33mpg!! US gallons.
