Bearing hub 2005 V70 V70-XC70

Good evening guys,

I need to replace the right hand side bearing hub on my 2005 V70.

I used to replace it 2 times on my 850s but this one is a bit different.

On the 850, there's a big 36mm axle nut but looks like there's only a small 13mm
screw on the V70. What is the procedure for this one?

Thanks a million

Norm

Just unscrew that bolt and remove it totally. That will allow the hub to slide off the end of the axle. You can unscrew it three or four turns andd tap it in with a hammer. That will help the splines release if they are rusty. Then unscrew it the rest of the way. Make sure it's good and tight when you reassemble it.

You will need a breaker bar to get it off. Lots of torque.

        This is a cute video:

There are some that claim that the steering knuckle does not have to be removed, provided you can reach the bearing bolts.

Yep, both CCW. It's going to be pretty tight.

Volvo recommends using new bolts as they are torque to yield (stretch) bolts. I've reused my old ones though with no apparent problem. It just needs to be good and tight in order to not over stress the splines when accelerating/decelerating.

Parts received and I'm planning to do that this weekend

What is the torque specs for the hub screws and for the axle one ?

          Thx

I replaced both hubs on Marys '04 V70 last night. It was surprisingly easy.

Remove the caliper and tie it up out of the way. Remove the brake rotor and the ABS sensor (carefully, don't pull on the wire. use a screwdriver to move the mounting tab before you try to pull it out). Take the bolt out of the end of the axle. Take the top bolt out of what would have been the spindle on a RWD car and just loosen the bottom bolt. Tip the top of the spindle out away from the strut. Whack the end of the axle with a 3/4" dowel to drive it back a little. There will be enough room to get the hub bolts out. You will have to hold the axle out of the way to get at each bolt. I reused the hub bolts and just tightened them goodentite. Use the dirt marks on the spindle to get it back in the same place it was (otherwise your camber might be off a little). Both sides took about 2 1/2 hours including a test drive.

            Greg

Front wheel hub in steering arm (M12)
            Step 1: Torque to 20 Nm (15 ft/lb)
            Step 2: Torque to 45 Nm (33 ft/lb)
            Step 3: Angle-tighten 60°

Drive shaft in front wheel hub not XC90 (M10)
            Step 1: Torque to 35 Nm (26 ft/lb)
            Step 2: Angle-tighten 90°

Caution, your bolts are already stretched. If it were me, I'd probably reduce the Angle-tighten values to about 75% of what's called out in the spec. That's just a shot in the dark though.
