Adaptive lambda control 1990

I have a 1990 740GL and I'm getting a code that reads Adaptive Lambda Control is too rich or too lean. Can someone explain this to me. I think it must be too rich because when it's idling black smoke comes from the exhaust.

Adaptive refers to altitude, you do not control it. If you are running rich you may have a vacuum leak - just don't ask us where the leak is.
