1996 850R cv boots 850

Hello everyone,
I have a 1996 850R wagon with the M59 manual transmission and limited slip differential.
I am at my wits end trying to find the inner and outer cv boots since the current ones are on their last legs and I don't want to lose the cv joints themselves.

The axle shafts are approx 33mm thick and nothing seems to be available. The dealer is trying their best and I have gone through the loebro and empi catalogues to find something close that works.
Most axles seem to be around 24mm thick which is very hard to make work.

Has anyone out there recently bought new boots for these shafts and can furnish some part numbers. Even if it's from a different car that fits is fine too.

Thanks in advance,

Klaus

More of a 'bump' to keep this thread active.

Klaus, have you tried wiping the boots with a vinyl/rubber conditioner? It will help keep them pliable a little bit longer. No need to buff off the excess, just give the boots a good thick coating and let them dry overnight.

You do need to look at Europe/England. Ask the same question to these very good folks:

Hi Klaus,

I haven't tried a conditioner yet since there are already cracks developing. I have been to the dealer a few more times and they have sold me two kits that are supposed to work. One of them is perfect but the other has a smaller diameter hole which looks to be around 26mm or so. The parts are 31256237 and 31256227. Tomorrow I will take the shafts out and see if I can stretch the small er diameter hole over the shaft without it tearing.
I really don't understand how there should be two different diameters of shaft size when the shaft is a uniform 33mm the whole way across. Maybe when i take it apart I will see.

I appreciate all the help,

Klaus

Well folks,

It all worked out with a little stretching. New boots and hopefully they last a long time now. Love the car a lot and always pleased when I can keep it running.
Thank you all for all the help and I wish you all lot's of fun with your Volvos,

Klaus

Ouch. All I can find is NLA. Of course, that is in the USA where the "R" only came in Automatic mode. You might be able to ask dealers in Canada if they have any boots, or anywhere in Europe where all of the "R" models were offered with a clutch.

Hi Klaus,

Thanks for the reply,

Ouch is right. I should have mentioned that I am in Canada and the dealer is trying to help but they aren't having much luck with this particular model.
I'll keep trying of course but it's an old car which doesn't help.

Have a great night,

Klaus

Here's a strap-on type with 1.3" (33mm) shaft diameter and 3" at the large end. What diameter does the large end need to be?

Hi Chris,

Best I can measure without the boots off the shafts are approx 95mm and 81mm.

Thanks for the reply,

Klaus

There should be enough shaft exposure to get the Circumference. Then diameter = C/3.14.

My tape measures are in inches and converting that to MM is always a pain.
