car stopping when hot S80 2010

A good friend of mine reports that his S80 3.2 litre dies unexpectedly when it is hot but then revives after a short cool down, allowing him to continue on his way but giving him a lot of consternation.

Has anybody else experienced such a problem and if so what can be done about it?

Further information. This happens only when in lengthy stop and go traffic and when the engine heats up because of the congestion and waits, etc. He gets the car over to the side of the road, removes some of its insulation, and after a half hour or so is able to continue on his way home.

Do these cars have any kind of central power distribution unit similar to what one would find in a 240 or a 940 [my cars].

He should have had some messages on the dash, at least a check engine light. These cars have a fan in the computer box and if the air flow is restricted it will over heat.

Ask if both radiator fans are running and what about the engine temperature? What insulation is he removing, the plastic engine cover?

He is only able to find one radiator fan and it is working. Could you advise as to where the other fan is located?

He found a couple of plastic bags between the grill and the radiator which has has now extricated.

No problem on yesterday's commute but he did not encounter a lot of stop and go driving.

He might have found the problem: "He found a couple of plastic bags between the grill and the radiator which has has now extricated." Depending on where the plastic was, that can cause the tranny to over heat, the AC to over heat, the computer box to over heat.

I don't know about the 2010 models, but the S80 used to have two radiator fans behind the radiator. One would turn on when the AC compressor is activated, the other for the engine temperature, both if the engine was getting too hot.

So far he has only seen one radiator fan, Klaus, and the car has been working fine. Friday might be the trial, when traffic builds up for the weekend. I will keep you in touch as to what is happening.

He is not getting any messages or a fault that he could read with the code reader. He's not sure about the rad fans but will check them today.

The cover he is removing is the insulated plastic cover that sits atop the plugs and intake manifold.

He has cleaned out a lot of oil around the coils and has changed plugs. He also shifted the coils around to see if that makes any difference. He will let me know how the commute works out today.

        Thanks for your input, Klaus.
