Power seat - all control buttons inop intermittently

This is a 2007 S60, with power seats on both driver and passenger sides.

The problem rears its head as the Driver seat not responding to any of the control buttons. Then you shut off the engine, or just leave it running for a period (?) of time, come back and try the seat again. About 1/2 the tries fail to get any movement or sound out of the seat motors. Other times, it's working again.

The fact that it works sometimes and not others? So far, I haven't been able to correlate it to anything else going on, except if it fails now, it will fail 10 seconds from now, 5 minutes from now, but at some point within maybe the first hour, it is possible to resume working, without doing anything except waiting.

It affects all the Driver Seat Control Buttons, the direct motor controls and the memory-setting controls. However, the passenger power seat still works, so it seems local to just the one seat. Has anybody dealt with this exact type of failure?

When it stops working (engine running), what happens if you then turn the key to Pos I (accessories)? Will the seat start working then?

Also you may find this an interesting read:

Notice the one shop suggested swapping LH and RH seat controls.

Good call, Chris. Your comment about the key position and the Mathhews article sent me off to look in my Users Manual for the S60. Indeed, there are conditions where the Driver's Seat controls are disabled, having to do with the key position and how recently the Driver's door was opened (or closed). I won't attempt to quote it here, and I can't for the life of me understand why they designed the software with a timeout. The driver can make the adjustments while the car is driving, so it's not pedal safety. Child safety when leaving kids in the car unsupervised??

So, if you're having this problem with the Drivers Power Seat being disabled temporarily, the place to start is the Users Manual. Re-enabling the seat controls (with the ignition key removed) looks to be as simple as closing the door and reopening it.

Unfortunately, after reading up on the rules in the Users Manual, the buttons for seat movement are failing when they should be active.

Back to the drawing board on this problem. I'll start with the fuse path. Then undo the battery, and reseat all the seat control connectors.

We've resolved this issue to a minor inconvenience. There seems to be a "timeout" after turning off the car and getting out and locking the doors. If you reopen and try to change the power seat position, it doesn't respond unless it's been approx 2 minutes since locking the door.

Now that we know about this timeout, we'll just work around it with patience.
