Heating / AC gremlins V70-XC70 2002

My "new" 2002 v70 has several "opportunities", since it is so hot now the AC is the most pressing. It has the manual temperature control (no temp settings). First problem; the HVAC fan has come on by itself a few times, full on, with the car parked, locked. First time it drained the battery completely, the other times i caught it, turned the car on, AC off, fan off, then it quits.
Second problem, there is always some heat (even with dials all the way to cool) and obviously this makes the AC feel lukewarm once the engine comes up to temp. I set the speed of the fan about half way, but i notice it speeds up and slows down by itself.
the clutch seems to be ok, the compressor engages and runs which tells me there is enough refrigerant. but the cooling inside is mediocre. Any suggestions on how to test the individual "gates" and other components? any suggestions at all?

Well, wonders never cease, i have read here that it is possible for the blower to turn itself on to dry out the evaporator? something to that effect. The first time this happened i was not driving it and the battery failed. I will keep this under observation.
yesterday i took the can on the freeway, no difference, just lukewarm air. Although both temp control knobs were all the way into the blue / cool side, i gave the driver side knob a nudge counterclockwise, did not feel it moved at all, but cool air starts coming my way! i did the same on the passenger knob, cool air on that side too.
the compressor is still cycling, will look into topping with R134. But at least i have some cooling now.

The blower has a rheostat which may be failing, but that doesn't explain why the blower can turn on with the ignition off. You might want to look at the wiring between the rheostat and the blower. Check for a burned wire.

The MCC is cable controlled, so there are no codes. But one of the cables may be routed incorrectly and the only way to verify this is to pull the unit from the dash.

If the compressor cycles a lot, it may be low on R134a.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

A code reader really helps with these cars.
Autozone will scan the car for free.
