Ac Compressor 850 1997

Need to replace my compressor. Realize i have to go to my gas station first to purge the system of refrig.

Few Questions.

If the compressor does not operator(recycle) at all I assume its not the clutch issue but the compressor itself?

I have replaced alternators but never a compressor. Is it difficult to get to. Would seem I have to take off front wheel to get at it?

Realize I should replace o rings and oil up the compressor. Am i forgetting anything else?

Lastly, can I replace the refrigerant myself, have done it on other cars but never on a completely purged system. Or do I need my mechanic to do it with his machine.

Thanks Madness

If you have a charged system and the compressor will not engage, did you try unplugging the pressostat and jumping the wires? Just use a paper clip to jump the 2 wires with the engine running. It is possible that the pressostat is at fault if the system is fully charged.

If the clutch gap is too large at the compressor, the clutch can be shimmed. You can use a feeler gauge to check the gap, anything over .030 is bad. If you shim the clutch, you can get it down to .010 without any problems.

One doesn't normally replace the compressor until there is bearing noise with the compressor running.

IF you replace the compressor, it is probably a good time to replace the receiver/dryer tank. Yes, you will want to remove the wheel for better access unless the car is on a lift.

Just $100 more than very good after market versions! Heck, if it weren't for the rust creating holes in the canister, you could just heat it up in a warm oven to completely dry it out. Just don't loose any of the drier stuff that is inside...
