Brake vibrations V70-XC70 2000

2000 V70 SE, AW-5, 238K miles

This car drives up and down a steep and curvy two-lane three mile mountain grade almost every day, with just me in it as the driver. Last week, the car transported four full-sized adults plus a couple hundred pounds of luggage to the airport. When applying the brakes going down the hill, I felt and heard what I'd call a scraping, vibrating sensation. Not loud or harsh like metal on metal, but it was certainly there. Once the car lightened its load again, there has been no more noise or vibration this past week.

First thing I'll check is the front brake pads and rotors; however, when I had the tires rotated last month the shop didn't say anything about worn pads or rotors. They're pretty good about calling attention to any needed maintenance. Tires are on the last third of their tread life, with 35K miles and due for replacement in about 7K more. I expect at least the front brakes will need pads and rotors then too.

Any experience with symptoms like this?

Sounds like rear brakes to me too.

I suspect that the rear rotors might be slightly warped and you only feel it when there is a heavy load/strain on the car. Next time it happens see if you can determine if the vibration is mainly felt through the brake pedal or steering wheel. If through the brake pedal it is the rear brakes. Steering wheel is the front.

Klaus is right on. A couple of years ago, quite a few Brickboarders were caught out when their rear brakes wore out before the fronts wore out twice, the old standard situation for most cars.

Newer cars have been set up to apply rear brakes first in gentile stops.

Better yet, check the brakes on all four wheels.

I confirmed the rear brakes wear out first with my son-in-law who is a top Subaru Tech. He told me that Subarus exhibit the same type of front vs rear brake wear.

Not the front brakes, check the rear pads! The increased load caused increased brake pressure the rear brakes don't normally get.

Keeping it running is better than buying new
