S40 Antenna Replacement S40-V40 2003

Anyone have any experience with replacing the antenna on an S40 1.9, it is a 2003 model and I am very happy with it. Any caveats to share? Somehow on backing out of my garage with the antenna extended the garage door started to come down, it broke the thing at the base so for the time being, no radio. I have seen new assemblies going for well over $200 but I am leaning toward a good used one for much less. It's probably straightforward but I thought I'd ask the experts first...thanks! Doug

Nope, I don't fit in the S40 so I don't even look at them. But, if the antenna mast is broken, you can replace just the mast:

    https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo-power-antenna-mast-s40-30662311

    Shop around for prices.

The 850/70 cars have a 16mm nut on the outside of the fender. If the S40 doesn't have something to unscrew, then it must be held on to the back side of the fender and is accessible from the trunk. No need to take the motorized portion of the antenna out.

Once the external part of the antenna is off (the part holding it to the fender), pull the antenna mast out. There will be a long plastic toothed ribbon that comes out with it. Note the direction of the teeth, the new mast will have to be inserted with the teeth facing the same direction.

Turn on the radio, this 'raises' the mast. Insert the new mast plastic part as far as it will go, kind of push hard the last 1/2 inch. A helper to turn the radio off will come in handy, because then the plastic should be reeled into the car. Insert the base of the mast, lock the mast back down, turn the radio on until the mast is extended, then turn it off making sure the antenna is flush again.

      S40 Antenna Replacement S40-V40 2003

Hi Klaus, thanks for the note. Sounds pretty straightforward, the S40 must be fastened down on the inside, there is no nut at the base of where the mast comes out on the upper fender. I have seen OEM but not Volvo P/N masts out there for around $15 so unless someone has some serious caveats about that, that's probably what I will go with. Thanks again. Doug

I recently changed the antenna on my '01 S40.
Mine has a nut on the outside at the base of the antenna. I wonder why yours doesn't.

It is indeed a very easy fix if you are simply replacing the mast.
I picked one up from FCP but I see it is not listed anymore.
It was a URO part # 3345775 and was only about $13. I generally stay away from URO parts, but this was ok.
