2005 XC70 Misfires V70-XC70

Hi everyone,

Our 2005 XC70 AWD 2.5T with 190k has been running rough and the check engine light came on. I had codes checked and cleared by our mechanic. He said that misfires in cylinders 3 & 4 were the issue. I installed coil packs, Volvo spark plugs, and a Wix fuel filter and had codes checked and cleared again. Codes P0101 (mass or volume air flow) and P2096 (post catalyst fuel system too lean) were cleared this time. I can't spend much more on this, but was thinking that the next step should be the air mass sensor. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Marc

Thank you very much for responding. You are correct, the car is running about the same as it was prior to installing the plugs, coils, and fuel filter. I have a code reader and it works on my S80, but countless attempts have failed on the XC70. My mechanic cleared codes again and cylinders 2 and 4 misfired. The plugs looked old and worn, but no oil on them and the cylinders were spotless. My thinking is that changing the sensor is the next step. The car is really clean and solid (aside from this issue) and I want to keep it, but I have to watch my expenditures.

I'm off to work. Have a great day. Thank you again.

    Marc

It is time for your mechanic to do a compression test. Spotless cylinders indicate coolant is leaking in to the combustion. The cylinders should be lightly coated with carbon.

Could you list all of the Pxxxx codes?

Did you attempt to clean the MAF with spray cleaner? That sometimes works for a while. Are you using a K&N oiled air filter or a paper filter?

        Hi Klaus,

Thank you very much for responding. I've appreciated your insight for years. The codes: P0300, P0302, P0304, P0101, and P2096. I didn't spray the MAF, but ordered one and expect to change it early next week. I use a paper filter.

I'm off to work. Thank you again.

I take it the car has the same symptoms, before and after the new coils and plugs. It would seem odd that a bad AMM would only cause a misfire on cylinders 3 and 4. Or is it that the Check Engine light is on ?

The basic Pxxxx codes can be obtained with a cheap OBD reader. It is very handy to see what you have without taking the car to a shop. The second set of codes don't really appear to have anything to do with the first set (what ever they were).

By chance do you still have the spark plugs you removed ? Are the insulators on two of them (3& 4) either very clean or slightly green tinted ?

    Greg
