Tailgate Locked shut V70-XC70

I have a 2004 V70 with 3rd row seating option. The tailgate is locked and will not open via the outside or inside latch. It makes no noise when I trigger the locks with the key fob or button. The lock button will not lift. I have pulled the inner panel off at the top but could not see much. I have cut the area below the inside release and can just see the back of the latch I have tried to move the white plastic arm but nothing seems to budge. There is NO external key slot on the outside of the door. How can I get the latch to release? I will post a picture as soon as I can figure out how to thanks.

Wife and I went out to try push and pry and on a whim tried external handle and it OPENED! Problem seems to be caused by actuator overextending and jamming everything, Removing two screws and pushing actuator back allows rod linkages to work properly

Good news! Now, had the outside latch been getting harder to pull before the failure? Or just no symptoms? I saw the T20 over on Matthews site and the brass plunger behind it, were the T20's getting loose?

I hope you can now 'repair' the panel...

Tailgate Locked shut - fixed V70-XC70

The screws were tight and the actuator is a brass colored plastic. I just bought this volvo V70 knowing the door did not open. It is a Titanium edition and really nice compared to my 98 V70 but I really like my 95 960 the most. I'm giving it a rest today and will pull the latch and leave a permanent inspection cover inside later this week.

You just might have a wiring problem inside the bundle at the hinge. I assume that the outside handle has no resistance, meaning the lock is engaged. I also don't know what the locks look like in the P2 cars.

To post a picture:

Put a "<" in front of the "img" and a ">" just after the last "/". No spaces. Change the www name to where yours are stored.

If the hinge wires were broken I would think powering the solenoid directly would bypass this problem what do you think? Thank you for your input

I am not familiar with this particular solenoid, but those that I have 'played' with would move by pushing it. That yours does not move would indicate that the lock itself is jammed. I would have someone push on the bottom of the tailgate on the outside while attempting to pull up on the lock pin at the top of the panel.

If a crayon fell into the latch area, that could create enough tension...

Thanks Klaus I wondering if the solenoid is in fact some sort of actuator. I unscrewed it and pushed the body back and the latch unlock button now comes up. When it warms up a bit I will get my with to push the tailgate in and pry the white plastic to the left, Thinking about it a solenoid would only pull in no matter what the polarity. The parts has some sort of rack that I cannot figure out how to move and why it is so stiff to move.

ANSWER Tailgate Locked shut V70-XC70

I have swapped relays and even pulled the RM119 relay and I hear a clicking from the REM but not from the relay. Current thinking is to cut and isolate the latch wires Grey and Yellow and power directly from a separate 12 volt source One polarity will open and the other way should close. If nothing happens I have an open solenoid. Anybody see any flaws with this method?

This post has been marked as an answer to the original question.

I disconnected the solenoid by cutting the wires and applied 12v and nothing both ways. I then checked continuity and to my surprise it reads about 250 ohms. I sprayed with pb blaster but the solenoid does not seem to budge when pushed with a screwdriver. I assume it has to move in to the left side of the car to open.
I am going to try to check amperage tomorrow but are beginning to think about an axe! Somebody must know how to coax this to open from the inside.

If you have removed the lock solenoid, duplicate its function from inside the tailgate, i.e. unlock the latch, go outside and operate the latch. If that doesn't work, you should be able to see the latch linkage from inside the door.

Our '04 V70 is reluctant to open the tailgate unless the hatch is pushed in a little before squeezing the handle.

Nope. There are instructions somewhere Art B or kittyvolvo have posted them many times but they never work for me.
