Doors Don't Auto-Lock V70-XC70 2003

The doors on my 2003 V70 don't lock when you start to drive away, like they do in my wife's 2005 S80. I actually prefer that they DON'T lock, but I was just curious if they were supposed to. It's been this way since I bought it third-hand about five years ago.

Are they supposed to lock? Is it possible that they used to lock and the PO had it disabled?

There is a door lock button you can use, but Volvo's response to automatic door locking has always been no. Their reasoning? If you crash, the first responders need to be able to open the doors and/or the occupants may have a serious need to get out of the car.

Newer programming of the door locking computer ($$$) allows the doors to unlock, sometimes, after a crash.

'Locking' the doors when the car is in drive, I believe, is an American security blanket. It does not help keep the doors from opening during roll over accidents, but it does give piece of mind to those city folks who drive through 'bad' neighborhoods.

"...Newer programming of the door locking computer ($$$) allows the doors to unlock, sometimes, after a crash...."

Maybe that's the way our 05 S80 is programmed, because it definitely locks at about 5 mph., and does NOT unlock upon stopping or turning the engine off. Either the driver or copilot must hit the lock/unlock button on their door arm rest in order to unlock all four simultaneously. Of course the pilot or copilot can always yank on their door lever which will unlock their own door only. Maybe the car is rigged to unlock the doors whenever the SRS is activated, but proving that could be both painful and expensive.
