need for speed V70-XC70 2000

While driving home from work this evening, the speedometer in my 2000 V- 70 stopped working along with the odometer and trip meter. The speedo needle rests at 0 and the odometer/trip meter read ---- and ------ respectively. There were no related performance issues when this occurred. They both came back intermittently but crapped out again. Should I be looking to replace the instrument cluster with a bone-yard unit, or is there possibly another problem source? Are any other parts required to swap a different instrument cluster into my car?

The speed signal starts at the tranny, goes through the ABS module, then to the engine computer, and eventually to the instrument cluster.

If the ABS or TRKS lights are not on, I would look for a loose wire or plug. If the ABS light is on, ship out the ABS unit for re-solder/repair. Do NOT replace the cluster!

Great information--- thanks so much! Is the re-solder a DIY project (I am fairly capable with a soldering iron) or one best left to a re-builder? If the latter is the case, who might I find to handle this type service?

My bet is on the ABS module. They can be opened and resoldered, or you can send it off for repair:
