V70R P2 rear subframe removal V70-XC70 2003

Hello,
I have a V70R P2 2003 which I've owned for about a year. The car has an historic oil leak from around the Haldex unit / rear diff area which is really covered in grease and oil and its now time to sort it. I am thinking that its probably a leak from the haldex pump / filter which are really difficult to access. I do most of my own repairs but I do not have a lift to raise the car.

Has anybody ever removed the entire rear suspension and rear axle complete by removing the subframe on a V70 P2 AWD (Or S60 AWD)?? If so any tips or advice? Armed with enough axle stands / trolley jacks this looks to be the easiest way..

Thanks

I would not open a can of worms by removing the rear subframe. Too many parts are suspended from it.

While the Haldex is not easy to work on, it shouldn't take more than a few hours to replace the filter and oil. Try to find the source of the leak first, clean up the mess and then drive it for a while and look for fresh evidence. There is only 1 quart of oil in the Haldex, and if it runs dry you will need a new unit.

Also check the bevel gear/transfer case for leaks, which could push out oil and dribble backwards. A leaking rear diff pinion will not push oil forward on to the prop shaft.

Be careful with parts as the 2003 has the older version of Haldex.

Hi Klaus, thanks for the reply, this is useful info. The angle gear and sleeve at the front have been replaced recently, so the front is good. The issue is gaining access to the Haldex to clean it off. I'm guessing that the logical place for one of these to leak is the filter or pump?

There are 3 pages to this, but worth reading:

Especially the last page. I followed the link to youtube which was very good. Note that the exhaust and prop shaft were still in place. Good placement of jack stands as well.

Thanks, this is all very useful info. Particularly in the video one of the final steps was to remove 40ml of (new) oil from the haldex unit to get the correct level. I am wondering whether mine has been overfilled which may explain the leak?
