Fuel filler door won't unlock 850 1996

With all the doors unlocked, using the central locking feature, this morning, the fuel filler door would not unlock. Ambient temp was 39 degrees. Do the motors on these get reluctant when they get old?

I couldn't find the hook for manual unlocking when I opened the door in the trunk for the right taillight fixture; I guess I need to poke around in there a little more. If that's missing in action, is there another non-destructive way to open the door?

This is a 20-year-old car, that lives in a fairly low-crime area. I'm inclined to remove the "strike" for the lock rather than replace the motor/solenoid that locks it. Advice appreciated.

Two of my 850s developed the same problem - the rubber grommet around the locking pin had folded over and caused problems with unlocking.

I did have to remove the lock mechanism to fix it.

Be thankful that you do not have a wagon - I had to take the interior apart all the way to the back door in order to get at the gas door mechanism.

I think you need to remove the trunk liner on the right to find the fuel door release. I do not think it's accessible from the tail light hatch.

Officially, it is accessible from the tail light hatch, but they didn't seem to put in anything that would keep it from getting caught behind a panel, which is what happened. Pulling the cover panel loose let me reach down and pull it.

And, yes, I did a field repair by bending the "strike" until it came off. I might get a locking gas cap; or not.

Should be a release somewhere in trunk. A new actuator is $95 from FPC. See link below. A pick & Pull used one would be even cheaper. If you remove the striker wouldn't it affect alarm setting? If you do go that way a locking cap would secure the tank. I would fix it to work with locking system.
