AWD vs FWD V70-XC70 2008

We are still driving two 960's, a 94 (250K) and a 96 ( with 307k miles) love them both. Im looking to add a 2008 V70 or XC70. I need a wagon again. I have no experience with AWD or FWD. How much difference will I find between the two drives. Recommendations?

thanks, Jim

AWD vs FWD V70-XC70 2008

We own a VERY basic '12 XC70 with FWD and a loaded '08 XC70 with AWD.

The 12, which we purchased new, drives somewhat peppier - this may be due to 60K fewer miles and improvements in engine management. We purchased the 08 two years ago with 70K on it.

The 12 gets around 2 MPG more and is TERRIBLE in the snow without snow tires.

We put snows on the 08 and he (Kimi) is great under all conditions - we use this car whenever the weather is bad.

Both cars are somewhat nicer than our 850s were, the 850s were great cars.

So much has changed since the 960! You should find the V/XC70 quieter and no more oversteer with the FWD. With snow tires, the FWD is quite good and the AWD is even better, just remember that the braking distance is the same.

As I get older, raising the platform and inch or two in the AWD makes it easier to get in and out of the car. The seats are still comfortable and with better butt warmers.

The AWD robs you just a little bit, about 1-2mpg, eliminates torque steer, is great on wet slippery roads (neither car will allow you to slide sideways under power), computers control everything in both models!

Maintenance is a bit higher for the AWD Haldex system, but it is a good system and is integrated nicely with the auto trans.

The storage space in the back is less than the 960, but the front passenger seat can be folded flat so you can carry some 2X4X8's inside the cabin.

I've only driven a 2011 XC(70) AWD T6. So my experience is rather limited with those specific models. Do have a few general comments though as I own 2 FWD's now. Also owned 2 previously.

FWD = Sportier and more precise handling and better gas mileage. Lighter and lower... Also, usually fewer repairs as they age.

AWD = Better handling in all driving conditions. It is my take that unless you live or drive in snow country then you don't need AWD. The T6 engine is a beast though! Fastest Volvo I've ever driven... Plus I was able to get 27 highway MPG on a couple of long trips with the 2011. About 19-20 city. Not bad...:)
