Noise When backing up - sometimes V70-XC70 2001

Bought a great 2001 V70-XC70 (auto trans) with 140,000 miles on it. Occasionally, when backing up (after backing about 6 feet) I get a funny bang from right rear and feels like I drove over something small. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Thanks.

Ditto on the parking brake shoes delaminating. This is quite common and needs to be addressed as soon as possible. The brake shoes are reasonably priced and it is also a good time to smear a bit of brake grease on the metal expander parts. OEM brake shoes come with caliper bolts.

Remember to slack the cable at the center console. Pry up the plastic under the arm rest and use a T40 or T50 to create as much slack as possible (counter clockwise). Tighten after the wheels are back on.

The only hard part is reattaching the large spring. I use a pair of pliers and a screwdriver to position the spring.

Use the screwdriver to adjust the star wheel before putting the wheel back on.

Remember, only rotate the rear wheels as if going forward. If you try to rotate them backwards, the diff will lock up the wheel.

My wife's 2003 XC with 110K miles at the time had a similar condition.
It turned out the right rear parking brake pad had come loose from it's backing plate and was getting jammed at times when she backed up.
