fuel filter bracket bolt spins 850

Hi all,

After 180K miles, I thought it would be a good idea to replace the original fuel filter. I sprayed the back end of the 12mm bolt with PB-Blaster. The bolt started to turn, but struggled. Then, snap?? The bolt still turns, but not easily.

Could I have messed up the bracket?

What should I try now? The fuel filter is still on and doesn't look like it will fall down, ever.

Thanks

I'd guess where the bolt was retained is corroded enough to allow the fixed end to rotate. In past experience with this situation I have cut, ground or torqued the bolt off which let me get access to the fixed end. I pushed, drifted it out and replaced with a new bolt, sometimes a heavy tyrap or 2. It may be possible to weld the fixed end in place or double nut it to pinch in place.
good luck

Spot on, Ian. I will cut off the head of the bolt, remove the threaded part from the bracket. Then go to the hardware store and get a replacement "aluminum" bolt, nut, and lock washer.

I am going to a different continent in a couple of days, so I can put this repair off for a few weeks. Good thing it is my project car! At least the filter won't fall off even if I drive it.

Personally I would buy a grade 10 minimum bolt and nut. Look for at your local auto or industrial supplier. Aluminum is really friendly with road salt and is a crappy bolt material. A high grade bolt will resist corrosion much better. I'd bet the steel bolt costs less also.
