One back Brake clunk, drag, hot S60 2004

My son says he parked car for several days and when he started backing out of parking space he heard a clunk as the car started to move and then grinding. We talked, it sounded like brakes stuck to rotors and they had broken loose, then some rust wearing off.

Unfortunately it has happened a few more times, and he says the back left wheel area smells hot and the wheel is noticeably hotter than others.

I will have one day to see the car this week if it seems like something I can fix, otherwise he'll take it to the local indy shop.

Any idea what is going on, if it is fixable at home (I have pretty good array of tools) or otherwise what we're looking at cost-wise to have it repaired?

Any diagnostic steps he can take? Is it safe to drive at all?

Thank you for your thoughts.

Most likely, the brake shoes for the parking brake delaminated and are now constantly rubbing the rotor. If you have a manual tranny, this needs to fixed right away. For an automatic, you could remove the rotor, save the springs, expander, etc and put the rotor back on. Then wait for new shoes and do both rear brakes at the same time - get new rotors and brake pads.

If you take the shoes off, you will not have a parking brake. When installing shoes, both sides need to be replaced at the same time.

probably the e-brake shoe came apart.
You'll find out when you take off the rotor.

You got it. The parking brake was removed, all better now. I'll replace it someday, maybe. It's an automatic and the driver doesn't use the p brake anyway.

      Thanks, good call.

I'd listen to Klaus and replace the rear brake pads AND the emergency brake shoes.

It's not very expensive, and the last place I'd cut corners would be brakes.

        Cheers, Bill
