Barely runs when restarting on a Hot Day after the engine was Hot S40-V40

No error codes. This has been going off and on for 2 years. It used to be more frequent, but I checked all of the hoses and found one not properly tightened down and I replaced the MAF out of a much lower mileage northern car. My car has over a quarter million miles in the deep south - LOTS of HEAT!

Problem goes like this: It is HOT outside and I drive the car. I turn it off. Anywhere from 15 minutes to 60 minutes later, I get in and restart the car. It will barely idle and I must give it gas until it will rev up. Until I can get it to rev up, it will stall if I try to drive it. Sometimes it can take 3-4 minutes before it will rev up.

Before replacing the MAF and tightening the clamp on the hose, I used to get error codes - but if I tried to remember them I would probably lead you down the wrong path - as I would probably give the wrong code. Now I get no error codes (or at least the light does not come on to tell me that it needs repairs).

This isn't happening too often any more - but it still exists.

With the temperatures cooling down, I expect this to be less and less of an issue until next summer. But by then, it will be driven by my teenagers. I would hate for them to have it stall in the middle of a busy intersection.

Any clues?

At 250K miles, this could be a host of problems. My first thought is that the throttle body (butterfly) is dirty. When you give it a little gas while the engine is stumbling, this opens the TB and allows more air to flow. Also check the air filter.

Make note of the coolant temperature when you attempt to restart the engine, it should be slightly elevated because the coolant was not flowing. The dash gauge is connected to the ECT sensor which is no longer a separate item in your car.

When you park the car for the day, can you check to spark plugs for fouling? You may have a dirty injector or two and they could be leaking fuel into the cylinder. But you would need to do that real soon, before the engine cools off. Not a lot of fun when it is hot outside and the engine is even hotter.
