Automatic transmission S70 2000

I would appreciate other S70 lovers shedding some light on the S70 Automatic transmission. My S70 with only 165,000km died yesterday and needs the automatic transmission replaced. This is the second S70 we have owned from new which needed a transmission replaced at around the same time.
Can the members please tell me if this has been a problem with the S70 and what the members have done? I have been quoted $13,000 Australian to replace it and while I love my car, I don't think it is worth it.
any information greatly appreciated!
I have had Volvos since 1973, with sometimes 5 in the driveway, so needless to say I am a little sad this morning!
cheers

If you have the 5 speed autobox, those are prone to break early. The software Volvo provided did not match the engine torque, along with problems with gear release timing.

The 4 speed auto was much more robust. With ATF flush every 100K Km, it usually lasts quite a long time. The solenoids can get dirty, but they can be replaced.

I would look for a donor/used transmission. Still, not a cheap option as the labor costs to replace approach 8 hours of shop time.

BTW, Volvo does not supply 'new' transmissions. They have 'refurbished' models for unreasonable prices.

Rule of thumb in the USA, do not buy a 2001-2 Volvo with automatic (our model years are typically 1 year behind the rest of the world). Holds true for the S80, S60 also.

Keeping it running is better than buying new

Our one-owner 2000 V70 SE (NA B5244S motor) with original five-speed AW-55 SN autobox now has 232K miles. (Hope I don't jinx it by posting this!).

About three years after the new purchase, we had a dealer software update to address the problems described above, and it was a successful repair. Every 65-70K miles the ATF is changed with Mobil 3309, for a total of three fluid changes thus far.

The car still shifts well with no flares, slipping or clunks. We drive hilly and curvy roads and the car is manually downshifted frequently from 5th to 4th and 3rd gears.

Probably a combination of regular maintenance and luck?!
