Automatic transmission S70 2000

I would appreciate other S70 lovers shedding some light on the S70 Automatic transmission. My S70 with only 165,000km died yesterday and needs the automatic transmission replaced. This is the second S70 we have owned from new which needed a transmission replaced at around the same time.
Can the members please tell me if this has been a problem with the S70 and what the members have done? I have been quoted $13,000 Australian to replace it and while I love my car, I don't think it is worth it.
any information greatly appreciated!
I have had Volvos since 1973, with sometimes 5 in the driveway, so needless to say I am a little sad this morning!
cheers
Eileen

That's a ridiculous price on the transmission replacement! Those 5 speeds are in a number of other makes and models, and in Europe it is commonplace to replace just the valve bodies to rehabilitate them, assuming other components aren't damaged. The re-manufactured valve bodies run about $600 USD.

Try posting on Matthew's Volvo site-- there's a guy named Mike who is in Melbourne (he goes by the screen name precopster), who has expertise with these transmissions and may be able to help or point you in the right direction for local help.

Good luck!
