2004 XC70 Evaporation Canister J Hose Replace Location V70-XC70

Hi,

We have a 2004 xc70 which has developed a strong gas smell when not running. I suspect the J hose to the evaporation tank is cracked but I can't find it on this model.

Does anyone know the best way to get to this to check and replace? Thanks

If the J hose is cracked you will have a check engine message. The J hose is not accessible without dropping the rear suspension and tank.

You need to verify where the gas smell is coming from. It could be from the filler neck or one of the two fuel pumps.

KlausC, The check engine has come on but I haven't checked the code. The smell seems to be coming from the area just in front of the rear wheels. You can smell it in the back seat on occasion as well.

Is it possible to see the J hose to check before dropping the tank? Thanks very much.

I am not sure if you can even get a hand up there. If you smell the gas just behind the passenger's rear seat, that's where the fuel pump is.

Get that code read, any auto parts store can get a generic code.

Klaus, The code read as a leaky gas cap. The cap is only 6 months old and genuine Volvo made in Germany. It still looks new in every way, seal perfect. Is there another boot in the filler tube that could be leaking? Thanks

There is no specific code for a leaking gas cap. That's part of the EVAP system.

Yes, there is a flexible join at the tank to filler pipe junction.

              Klaus,

Yes the codes were for an emission problem. The three different shops' computers all came up with the solution as the gas cap. I checked and cleaned the o ring, and the check engine light went off.

The problem remains though. A very strong gas smell which I can not find any leak. I'm wondering if it's intermittent and hidden away somewhere. I backed the car into the yard the other day, then pulled forward, within 15 minutes there was a 2 inch wide path of dead grass three feet long directly where the car had been. It must have been a pin hole spray of gas onto the ground there. I find no evidence of a leak in any line or connector. This wasn't a drip, it was an exact concise path.

Any ideas where to go with this? Thanks so much.

                The car is now fixed.

There was a recall for the fuel pump on these model xc70. The flange cracks and causes the fuel smell. Volvo repaired it with a new fuel pump and lines and everything is great. They washed and detailed the car for free too.

If you have this fuel smell problem, check the recall info for your model.
