Diagnosing a bad front spring? V70-XC70 2001

It's possible, but I have not yet confirmed that my driver's front spring is either worn out or broken. All I can say is that the car handles normally, but that there's noticeable sag in the driver's front corner.

Peeking up there, I can see the spring, a best as I can tell, it looks okay. There's no noises or creaking in front when I drive, but clearly something is out of whack.

In searching the net, it looks as if springs are a common problem with the XCs - but most of those comments are about the 98-00 models. While the front suspension looks very similar to those earlier models, I'm not sure if those comments apply to the 01-07 design.

I've done this sort of replacement/repair on a 240, 940, and C70 so I've got the tools and skills, but this is my first P2 model car.

If it is the springs, aside from OEM, is there are particular good brand or brands to buy or stay away from? Prices range from the $60s to over $130 each. That's a lot of range for a spring.

Broken springs are dangerous. Did you try using a pair of slip pliers to turn the large nut on top of the strut clockwise? This is normally the test of the spring seat, but if the spring is messed up, you should not get any return when letting go of the tension.

A sagged spring sounds like a bad one. If you are doing the work yourself saving $70 on an unknown part might not be worthwile... I know you have a bad OEM spring, but I'd go back to Volvo for the part. So much aftermarket is just plain junk.

      Good advice! V70-XC70 2001

I sucked it up and bought a pair of the $120 springs from Tasca Volvo. Peace of mind is better than having to do it all over again if aftermarket turned out to be junk.

Not sure of the validity of this comment, but worth considering:
A friends 2004 drivers side had a spring failure... he was warned to be very
careful driving the car because in a hard turn the spring could shift and the broken part might snag the tire, blowing it.
*** note I never checked the dimensions to see if that could happen.

Eek... my tire's holding, but that's a frightening possibility. I'll take a look under then and baby it on turns until my new spring arrive.

If it was me that caused the damage, it could have only occurred when I was making a very hard right turn (to get out of a dead line in a gas station). I climbed the curb a little bit with that very wheel.

But... I'm not sure that I didn't just miss it when I bought the car. It also had the opposite corner jacked up for over 30 minutes when I was getting a tire "de-screwed"
