Lug bolts too big??? S60 2005

In one of the more bizarre occurrences in my 40+ years of working on cars, on my new to me 05 S60, when I went to pull the wheels to change the hubs I found that the lug bolts were too big. And when I say too big I mean I have no idea how they were even installed. Through the use of a digital gauge I estimate them to be a bit under 25mm, flat to flat. None of my sockets will fit the socket, let alone slip between the bolt and the wheel. This car came to me through a dealer so I can't even talk to the shop that installed them, let alone find out why these bolts were installed in lieu of the stock size. As I said, biz-arre...

Wondering whether anyone has ever encountered this before and if so, what you had to do to get them removed. I'm anticipating having to buy a 25mm socket and have a machinist trim the outside of it so I can slip it into the space, then swap these monsters out with the stock bolts.

As always, any and all help greatly appreciated.

I'm doubtful that many on this board will have seen one, but there was a U shaped tool with prongs on the ends that we used to remove EEPROMS from their sockets to prevent damage. I'm betting with a little bending and shaping that will work great for pulling off the caps.

The plastic caps were a service fix for unsightly rusty lugs, and the kit did include a removal tool. Do you still have the Volvo tool kit packed with the spare wheel? Tool might be in there?

The tool kit was the first place I looked to see if the lug wrench would fit, which it didn't. Only the lug wrench and tow hook were in there. I checked ebay for a new set of caps which included the tweezers and then on a lark talked with the dealer's part department when I made the appointment to have them bring the software current. The dealer was cheaper so now I have 20 shiny caps on the wheels along with the tweezer tool.

I use a paint can opener to get the caps off. Home Depot gives them away for free, and the handle end is good for a beer bottle opener.

By any chance might you be looking at the removable chrome plastic caps that some of the lug bolts have?

Unbelievable. I've never owned a car that had those. Unbelievable.

Just went out and pried a few off and just sat there, stunned. Wow.
