A few months ago I posted a query asking if anyone had an idea why the ambient temperature sensor in my 1999 XC was registering temperatures that were 15 to 20 hotter than the actual temperature. I received several good recommendations, including of course the temperature sensor itself was defective. I just found out from my mechanic that the actual temperature module in the dashboard, that reads out the temperature was defective. He compared the temperature reading of my ’99 XC to several other cars in his shop and found it gave an elevated temperature reading. He then took the spare instrument cluster from an 850 parts car and connected it to the external temperatures sensor on my ’99 XC. The spare 850 instrument cluster displayed an accurate temperate. I am not replacing the instrument cluster, so I’ll learn to live with this inconsistency. The car runs great otherwise and also looks great. We all have our flaws, why not our Volvos?

Replacing the cluster on the 99 would be difficult. First, you would need to find one with the same part #, then there would be a question of the 'new' odometer reading - the miles are stored in the cluster.

This is something you live with, so change the computer readout to show miles to empty or something else.
