Owners manual lies! V70-XC70 2009

I just had an awakening; the scales have fallen off my eyes etc.
Headed out for work yesterday morning at 0420 in the dark. The V70 started right up, but told me I had a low beam failure. Ok, so I got out and checked that it was the right side and made my way off along the road. At that hour there is not much problem with using the high beams anyway, so I was even able to see every deer that I know I didn't hit...
Hauled the manual out of the glove box in it's lovely folder and brought it into work. Checked the bulb change. Ok, the headlight comes out just like a GM truck, and the bulb is a H7. Easy. Call the life partner at home. She is bored, so will be glad to go to the jobber and buy the bulb.
Get home later. Pop out the light. Unhook the wire. Open the back. Manual says undo the clip and remove the bulb. Bulb mounting says turn ccw to open. Extract the bulb and it is a H11. WTF?
Fjord confusion? The new Chinese models must be even worse. My advise to others, check the bulb before you send the life partner to the store.

I survived, and she made a lovely tart for desert, but others may not be as understanding.

I wonder how much other information is wrong? Maintenance information perhaps? Component service intervals?

Makes me wonder about the next good looking 245 that shows up on bringatrailer.com

No, I haven't yet been lured to the dark side. While scanning RWD I saw your intriguing title "Owners manual lies!" on the right side panel.

If you are thinking this never happened with those 245's (that might show up on bringatrailer.com) built before Ford or Geely, I'm here to tell you that glove box bible is written by humans. They have the typical year-to-year copy/paste errors and some are at least as impacting as your two trips to the store.

The details are really not relevant to a FWD thread, but the concept of providing a golden source for owner's information -- the official word of Volvo -- suffers from the reality of "git 'er done" which pervades every industry to some extent. Anyone obsessed with detail will find the holes.

Perhaps not such a comment on the state of Volvo in the 21st century, as it is a comment on problems rife in our society today. Do we trace it Richard Nixon? Jack Kennedy, or that infamous person who first said "The check is in the mail"?
As to whether this is the dark side or not, you'd love the sweet six in my V70, at least until you opened the hood. Fuel economy can be comparable to an autobox 240, but the 240 won't hit the buck in third and still have three more gears to go...
Check out the 1800ES on bat this week.

Are you sure Volvo is wrong, or the last person to changed the bulb?

Two parts sellers tell me that the bulb should be H7.

Just ran into the same thing. The manual is wrong. Which can be annoying given how many lamps are in our 2008 V70 headlight assembly. I noticed the passenger side amber running light not working so figured it was the parking lamp. No, the parking lamp flashes when locking the car. There's another lamp right next to it. In addition, I discovered a small lamp between the high and low beam that isn't working on the other side. Do I trust the manual to give me the right number on these small glass and wire lamps?

Is there a verified list of what lamps are in my V70? The driver footwell lamp is out too. Going to pull all these out and get them from Amazon.

The manual is wrong. I am the only person who has ever had the headlight out. H7 has a flat metal base that fits on just so and is retained by a metal clip. The prongs of the plug stick straight out of the back. H11 has a rubber gasket and ears that fit into the headlight and lock when you turn it. There is an L shaped plastic snout that the wire plugs into.
Mostly just an old guy being shocked at how sloppy the world has become. And a little bit grateful that the jobber is so close and open in the evening.

I have yet to understand the timing belt change intervals. 120K for the first replacement and 70K miles for the replacement belts. Really? Are the belts and rollers and tensioner not as good as new?

As for bulbs, those specs haven't changed in years. Someone forgot to tell the tech writers...? I can't blame the Chinese for this.

My manual came from Ford. I do wonder if the Chinese will be more through, or whether they let the Swedes handle things without micro management.

I can't help but think that extending the recommended service intervals can be attributed more to marketing strategy than best practice. But then I'm always the suspicious one.

"...I wonder how much other information is wrong?..."

Like when they don't list transmission fluid change as a service item? .... and that's on a car that can often go 300,000+ miles.

The transmission was the thing I was thinking about when I wrote the post. If it isn't leaking leave it alone is the essence of the manual's advice. When it leaks replace it? Throw the car away? Wipe it up and sell it?
I've got 80k miles on the car, I suppose I ought to figure out how to change fluid?

For those of us who still do transmission fluid changes...
The biggest mistake that I've come across is my 2001 S40 owner's manual recommendation of Dexron transmission fluid. It actually should be Mobil 3309 or equivalent.
