Power steering stiff S60 2005

I have just noticed that my power steering is a bit stiff. We checked the level of the fluid when we got home and I think it's good.

Any other suggestions? I'm a bit reluctant to drive it this way.

Thanks for any help. I have gotten such great help here before.

So, if it's the U joint, does that mean the steering probably won't just seize up on me while I'm driving (assuming of course that I get it dealt with promptly)?

If it is the u-joint then you are probably fine as long as you deal with it in a timely fashion. Have it checked out.

It can be dangerous if it reaches the point where the steering begins to not return to center on its own.

It most likely is the steering shaft u-joint near where the steering shaft attaches to the steering rack. Try spraying it liberally with WD-40 while moving the steering from lock to lock for a few minutes. This could take a few applications to loosen the u-joint. Been down that road before with my 240 and 850. Your car is now old enough to require that maintenance. Will need to be done every few years or so.

Hope that is the simple solution to your problem...:)

Thanks again. It was the U-joint. The garage fixed it. I got sick and didn't drive for several months and then I forgot to come back and tell you that you were right. By the time I was ready to drive again, it had a flat tire, so I got CAA (Canadian version of AAA) to tow it to the garage. I didn't have to worry about driving the 20 some km with the stiff steering. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm too much of an old lady to do that myself. I'll just get Swedish Auto to fix it. And thanks for the tip about dealing with it as maintenance every few years.
